Snails Are Faster Than ADSL
نویسنده
چکیده
Snails are widely assumed to be slow animals. Yet the literature on sluggish speed is surprisingly limited, and only few have actually bothered to measure and record it formally. Further, reported gastropod speeds vary widely with species and circumstance, ranging from 0.000023 to 0.0028 meters per second ([1] and [2], respectively). With that in mind, it is not surprising that the use of snails as data communications agents was not considered up until the research reported here. Indeed, one can hardly reconcile the phlegmatic disposition of slugs with the fantastic speeds at which information is expected to flow over the Internet. Yet as we show below, the negative attitude towards using snails in communications networks is an example of bounded rationality [3] impeding bold and creative engineering.

Sex-Differential Herbivory in Androdioecious Mercurialis annua
Males of plants with separate sexes are often more prone to attack by herbivores than females. A common explanation for this pattern is that individuals with a greater male function suffer more from herbivory because they grow more quickly, drawing more heavily on resources for growth that might otherwise be allocated to defence. Here, we test this 'faster-sex' hypothesis in a species in which ...

Telecommunication companies have received a great deal of research attention, which have many advantages such as low cost, higher qualification, simple installation and maintenance, and high reliability. However, the using of technical maintenance approaches in Telecommunication companies could improve system reliability and users' satisfaction from Asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) ser...
متن کاملSneaky snails and wasted worms: kleptoparasitism by Trichotropis cancellata (Mollusca, Gastropoda) on Serpula columbiana (Annelida, Polychaeta)
Individuals of the marine snail Trichotropis cancellata can either suspension feed or steal food from tube-dwelling polychaete worm hosts (kleptoparasitism). Because kleptoparasitism is facultative in this case, the performance of both members can be evaluated separately and together. I used field experiments to compare the growth of suspension feeding snails with that of snails (either singly ...
متن کاملAre Sick Individuals Weak Competitors? Competitive Ability of Snails Parasitized by a Gigantism-Inducing Trematode
Parasitized individuals are often expected to be poor competitors because they are weakened by infections. Many trematode species, however, although extensively exploiting their mollusc hosts, also induce gigantism (increased host size) by diverting host resources towards growth instead of reproduction. In such systems, alternatively to reduced competitive ability due to negative effects of par...
متن کاملParasite and host elemental content and parasite effects on host nutrient excretion and metabolic rate
Ecological stoichiometry uses the mass balance of elements to predict energy and elemental fluxes across different levels of ecological organization. A specific prediction of ecological stoichiometry is the growth rate hypothesis (GRH), which states that organisms with faster growth or reproductive rates will require higher phosphorus content for nucleic acid and protein synthesis. Although par...
